RV Batteries Info | RV Battery FAQs

At Battery Giant, we want our customers to be happy with their RV battery purchase. We achieve this by providing our customers with all the information they need regarding RV batteries. Below are basic RV battery FAQs to help answer any of your general RV battery questions.

Q: How does a RV battery work?
A: A RV battery works similar to other common batteries. RV batteries store energy in a chemical form that can be released on demand as electricity. Each RV battery cell consists of positive plates, negative plates and an electrolyte solution. RV batteries produce electricity because of the chemical reaction between these elements.

Q: What should I consider when purchasing a replacement RV battery?
A: There are three important factors to consider when buying replacement RV batteries. While shopping for replacement RV batteries, it is critical to consider size, power and warranty. Although it is recommended to consult the manufacturers recommended guidelines in attaining the correct replacement RV battery, below are some general factors to consider while selecting a replacement RV battery.

First, you have to make sure the replacement RV battery will fit. Check the physical dimensions of the new RV battery with that of your original RV battery. Next you need to consider what the required power is for the replacement RV battery. Finally, you need to consider the RV battery warranty period. We recommend choosing replacement RV batteries with a warranty period that best fits your needs.

Q: What causes batteries for RVs to fail?
A: There are several factors that contribute to the failure of replacement batteries for RVs. Excessive heat causes corrosion, which can dry out the replacement RV battery cell. This is probably the number one reason for the failure of replacement batteries for RVs. Extreme cold weather can sometimes put a heavier drain on RV batteries. This also is a contributor to RV battery failure. Also, if a RV battery is not securely held down, vibrations can shed the active material from the RV battery plate grids. This will cause failure in most batteries for RVs. Overcharging a RV battery may cause overheating. Although typically a prolonged process, overcharging can eventually cause RV batteries to depreciate. Other possible factors that can cause RV batteries to fail include corroded terminals, sulfation due to inactivity, or electrical shorts in the RV battery itself. These are just some of the common causes of RV battery failure. RV batteries can vary in composition, which can influence how RV batteries depreciate.

Q: Where is the best place to store RV batteries during the off season?
A: Before storing a RV battery, make sure it is fully charged. Remember that fully charged RV batteries will not freeze, but a discharged RV battery can freeze. Test your RV battery and charge the RV battery if necessary. It also might be wise to purchase a RV battery maintainer. After a full charge and test, now you are ready for RV battery storage. It is important to store RV batteries in a cool, dry and well ventilated area out of the reach of children or pets. Check the level of the RV battery charge every 30-45 days. A trickle charge using a RV battery maintainer or low amperage charge overnight might be necessary for some RV batteries depending on their age and composition. Also a good RV battery storage precaution is to check the fluid level inside the RV battery. If the fluid level is low inside the RV battery, add distilled water.

Q: How do you properly charge RV batteries?
A: Proper charging of RV batteries is important. While the RV battery charger or RV battery maintainer is still unplugged, connect the leads to the proper (+)(-) terminals. Wiggle the RV battery connectors to ensure a good connection. Adjust the settings on the RV battery charger for correct voltage and amperage. Now you can plug in the RV battery charger and turn it on. While charging RV batteries in a well-ventilated area, periodically check on the RV battery for any obvious signs of RV battery charging malfunctions. Make sure that while charging RV batteries that there is no signs of overheating. If the RV battery is too hot to touch or if the RV battery is gassing profusely, turn the charger off immediately. Once the RV battery is fully charged, turn the charger off, unplug it from the wall and unhook the RV battery charging cables. Always use caution when charging RV batteries.

Q: What can I do to help preserve the life of RV batteries?
A: Follow these guidelines every 3-6 months to help extend the life of RV batteries.

  1. Check RV batteries for cleanliness - If the RV battery tray is dirty or corroded, first remove the RV battery cables, followed by the RV battery unit. Wash the RV battery tray with a water and baking soda solution. Flush the RV battery tray with water and thoroughly dry it off. If necessary, further clean the RV battery with a brush or a special terminal cleaning tool. It is also safe to wash most RV batteries with the baking soda and water solution, however, be sure that the RV battery vent caps are on tight (if the RV battery is not sealed) to prevent anything from entering into the RV battery cells. Clean RV batteries, in a clean tray, will ensure the best connection.
  2. Check RV battery hold down brackets - Make sure the brackets holding the RV battery to the frame are secure. Excessive vibration may cause premature failure in RV batteries. If the RV battery brackets are loose, tighten them and spray them with a corrosion preventative spray. This will keep the corrosion on RV batteries from rebuilding.
  3. Check the RV battery case - The condition of the RV battery case can indicate if you have a problem. If the RV battery case is swollen on the sides (concave) there is probably a charging system problem. If the RV battery case is cracked, the RV battery should be replaced. These RV battery problems are non repairable. In these incidences, it is recommended to replace the RV battery immediately.
  4. Check fluid levels within RV batteries - Remove the vent caps and check on the fluid level inside the RV battery. If you see fluid, the RV battery is most likely fine. While looking in the cell of a RV battery, if you see an exposed lead plate, distilled water should be added. Be careful not to overfill the cells in RV batteries. As with most batteries, the fluid level in a RV battery should stop approximately 1" under the top of the RV battery.
